Elle - TS #15

Date/Time: May 12, 6:00-7:00pm Location: Zoom meeting Feedback provided to tutee: We shifted focus from pronunciation into targeted vocabulary, working through ten work and ambition words like ambitious, pursue, dedicated, setback, and persevere. The speaking challenge required my tutee to use each word in three to five sentence answers, which kept the speaking practice from earlier sessions going while introducing new material. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that pivoting from pronunciation into vocabulary kept the lessons going in a good direction as she improved overtime since we had started.

Date/Time: April 1, 4:00-5:00 Location: Sweet Shop Cafe Feedback provided to tutee: We worked through minimal vowel pairs like ship/sheep and bit/beat, focusing on the long i sound that doesn't exist in Spanish. I also made sure to give her mouth-position tips.   Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that Spanish speakers often cannot hear certain English vowel contrasts at first, since the sounds don't exist in their language. I also learned that pairing the drill with a visual cue helped her physically see the difference.

Date/Time: March 28 Location: tutee house Feedback provided to tutee: Tutee wrote the essay that we had planned in the last session. I answered her questions about transition words and essay writing. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that pre-planning an essay with a tutee pays off. Since we had a plan, she was able to write the essay on her own.

  Date/Time: April 29, 4:30-5:30 Location: after school camp Feedback provided to tutee: I corrected my tutee’s grammar in her creative essay. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that 3rd graders don't understand most grammar rules by name, so it was important to explain in an easy to understand way.
