 Date/Time: 3/2/26, 3:00 - 4:05PM

Location: CIES

Topic/Skill: Reading and Speaking (Comprehension and Pronunciation)

Feedback Provided: The tutee was asked to read a passage about an American folk hero out loud and to identify key people, places, and topics in the passage after each paragraph. As the tutee read, we paused to correct pronunciation issues that arose (differentiation of sounds in compound words, the hard English th- sound, the pronunciation of English -ough words). When the tutee gave her responses, minor grammar corrections were provided. A self diagnosis was also provided at the start of the tutoring session, to understand where the tutee may struggle in various topics of English grammar.

Lessons: ESL students can struggle to comprehend passages when they're read aloud vs internally. The act of speaking English is likely already such an area of focus that it's hard to maintain information while also attempting to speak the language properly. Additionally, there are a number of sounds and words that are natural to English speakers but wholly irregular to ESL students.
